Centre Practice Refused NHS GP Recruitment Funding
In March 2026, Centre Practice recruited an additional salaried GP to improve appointment availability and patient access.
Following the introduction of the NHS GP Reimbursement Scheme on 1 April 2026, the practice applied for funding support for this post. NHS England has confirmed that the GP is not eligible for reimbursement because employment commenced before the scheme start date.
This means that practices recruiting additional GP capacity shortly before 1 April 2026 may not qualify for funding, whereas similar appointments made after that date may be eligible.
We have raised concerns that this may be an unintended consequence of the scheme and are seeking further clarification through professional and representative bodies.
Importantly, this does not affect patient care. The additional GP remains in post and we remain committed to improving access for our patients.
